Катаколон (Олимпия)

Katakolon is a small holiday port town in Ilia, western Greece. Known as the ‘gateway to Olympia’ Katakolon lies just east of the ancient city of Olympic, the birthplace of the famous Games. After leaving the port we will drive to Olympia to visit this important archaeological site excavated in the XIX century by a team of German experts. According to legend, Olympia was built by Zeus, the king of the Greek gods. We will admire the ruins of the Temple of Zeus, the gymnasium, the hyppodrome and the Stadium designed to hold up to 40.000 spectators. Free time scheduled for shopping

Please note: this tour is not suitable for guests with mobility problems as long walking is involved. Shopping is not on holidays or Sundays. This tour is not foreseen on the call of May 01, 2012 (MSC Melody and MSC Musica).

 

 

 

TRANSFER TO THE BEACH

After a 30-minute bus transfer to Kourouta beach you will have free time to relax in the sun; swim and relax on the shore.

Please note: the tour is planned from June throughout September. A consumption is required to use free sun beds and umbrellas available on the beach.

 

 

OLYMPIA & MUSEUM

After leaving the port we will drive to Olympia to visit this important archaeological site excavated in the XIX century by a team of German experts. According to legend, Olympia was built by Zeus, the king of the Greek gods. We will admire the ruins of the Temple of Zeus, the gymnasium, the hyppodrome and the Stadium, designed to hold up to 40.000 spectators. The tour also includes a visit the the Archaeological Museum.

Please note: this excursion is not for calls of MSC Divina and for all calls falling on Monday morning. This tour is not suitable for guests with mobility problems as long walking is involved. This tour is not foreseen on the call of May 01, 2012 (MSC Melody and MSC Musica).

The tour will continue in a restaurant in Olympia where we will enjoy a typical folk show and snacks.

Here a local guide will provide you with detailed explanations about the legends, history and the famous archaeological excavations initiated in the XIX century by a team of German experts. We will learn about the ruins of the Temple of Zeus, the Gymnasium, the Hyppodrome and the Stadium which was designed to hold up to 40.000 spectators.

Please note: this tour is only for MSC Melody  and MSC Musica calls on 01.05.2012 and it does not include visit inside the archaeological site. 

 

 

 

“MAGNA GRECIA” ESTATE & OLYMPIA

You will receive a welcome cocktail before discovering the way of producing homemade wine and olive oil. Enjoy a typical light snack in the estate before returning to the ship.
