African and Arabic hospitality await you in exotic Tunis, the capital of Tunisia. It consists of 3 cities: the modern City, with wide streets, skyscrapers and busy sidewalk cafes, the Arabic Medina (old town), an exciting labyrinth laden with secrets, small shops, huge mosques and palaces, and Carthage, the ancient Phoenician - Roman city.

HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL TOUR

After boarding your coach and leaving the port of Tunis, known as La Goulette, you will head for the nearby archaeological ruins of ancient Carthage, a city from the 6th century B.C. that was once the base of a powerful trading empire. Its most famous citizen was Hannibal, the general who crossed the Alps to do battle with the Romans. You will have a chance to visit the baths of Antonius and a small local museum located on Byrsa hill at the Carthage site. The next stop on the tour is at Sidi Bou Said, a typical fishing village with characteristic white and blue houses that was founded by Andalusian Arabs. The village is perfect for a gentle stroll through its pretty streets and you will have some free time to explore on your own before returning to the port.

SHOPPING TOUR

This enjoyable shopping tour begins with a short coach ride from the port to the old medina quarter, which is a UNESCO world heritage site and boasts some 700 monuments, including historical palaces, mosques, mausoleums and fountains. It is also where spectacular architectural beauty meets a shopper’s delight: the typical and traditional spice market with hundreds of stalls selling a huge variety of local produce. After the medina, you will continue on to the little fishing village of Sidi Bou Said, which was founded by Andalusian Arabs and is known particularly for the consistent white-and-blue colour scheme of the houses all throughout the town. You will have time to soak up the special charm of the village on your own before beginning your return trip to the port.

BEACH TOUR

After leaving the port of La Goulette we will drive to Gammarth, a lovely seaside resort just 20 kilometres from Tunis. During the 19th century Gammarth was a favourite spot for wealthy Tunisians to spend their vacations and today it remains an attractive tourist destination with sandy bays and picturesque coastal scenery. This excursion allows you to enjoy a few hours in a resort, to bathe in the clear Tunisian sea or simply relax on the beach. A welcome cocktail is included.    

Please note: this tour runs from June through September and is foreseen only for guests onboard MSC Sinfonia and MSC Orchestra. We recommend guests bring a towel and sunscreen.

 

 

 

CARTHAGE & MEDINA

Leave the port and enjoy a coach transfer to the ancient site of Carthage which was built on a promontory and ensured the city’s key role in maritime trade. Since 1979, Carthage has been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site ; we will visit the Punic ports and the “tophet” – a Phoenician-Punic open-air sanctuary – before continuing to the Antonino Baths. The excursion also allows time for shopping in the Medina, the typical Arab market in Tunis. Your guide will point out the different types of goods and spices whilst we stroll the narrow streets of the market. Return to the port

HISTORY & COLOURS OF TUNIS

We will leave the port of La Goulette and head to the superb Bardo Museum, a former 13th century palace famous for its outstanding collection of mosaics and major findings from Carthage. The Bardo is akin to the Louvre in its extensive and impressive collection of exhibits. We will enjoy a guided tour of some of the rooms to admire the most significant displays, including the exquisite Virgil Room, which houses a spectacular 3rd century mosaic from Sousse. Our next stop will be Sidi Bou Said, a typical fishing village famed for its picturesque blue and white houses. Enjoy some free time here before returning to the port.

Note also that parts of the Bardo Museum are currently undergoing restoration, so not all rooms can be visited. This tour is not foreseen for guests onboard MSC Sinfonia.

 

 

 

 

EXPLORING THE COLORFUL SOUKS OF TUNIS

Your excursion will begin with a short panoramic bus tour of Tunis’ modern district, which offers a great introduction to this fascinating North African city. We will then head to the colourful world of the Medina (market); accompanied by a guide, you can stroll the streets of this lively district for some shopping, Arabian style. You can soak up the sights and sounds of this souk as you admire the many handicraft stalls and inhale the fragrant scent of spices. We will stop at a traditional carpet shop to learn about the history and traditions of the Berber people, who are famed for their production of quality Tunisian carpets and rugs. Our tour concludes with a café stop to sample local pastries and coffee whilst enjoying a display of Tunisian folk dance.

KAIROUAN

A 2-hour coach drive will take you to the ancient city of Kairouan, which was founded by the Arabs circa 670 A.D.. It was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1988 and is considered to be the Islamic Culture Capital. Your first stop will be at the Grand Mosque of Sidi-Uqba, which features 414 marble, granite or porphyry columns that were mainly taken from the ruins of Carthage. The Mosque counts as one of the most important monuments of Islamic civilization and as an architectural masterpiece. Next you will visit the Mosque of the Barber, a site built in honour of Abu Zama’ al-Balaui, a companion of the prophet Muhammad. A stop at the large water reservoirs originally built by the dynastic Aghlabid family and at a typical souk will whet your appetite for lunch at a renowned hotel. The tour concludes with a visit to Port El Kantaoui, a dazzling white Tunisian village with a beautiful marina where you will have time to explore on your own.

Your luxury beach experience begins with a relaxing 50-minute coach journey from the port of La Goulette to the Dana Beach Club, which is part of a 5-star hotel with its own sandy beach giving onto the turquoise waters of the Bay of Hammamet. Look forward to a full day at the club enjoying its luxuriously appointed facilities, such as a king-sized swimming pool, 3 Jacuzzis, a bar, a volleyball area and a well-equipped kids’ playground. The excellent restaurant will provide a buffet lunch on the private beach. Also at your disposal are three massage cabins as well as state-of-the-art equipment for a variety of water sports, such as water gliding, parachuting or water skating. Your day of sun, sand and sea ends about mid-afternoon with your leisurely return trip to the port and your ship.
